Class Instructions (Kathak and Mohiniyattam):

1.Parents  to be available to pick up/drop their  child for classes.

2.Students to be picked up/dropped  on a timely manner based on the class schedule .

3.Prepare to take notes at the end of the session. Students need to bring pen, notebook , water and snacks as needed.

4.Kathak certifications are available based on the grade levels of the student and will be conducted once a year after completion of the first year of learning at the academy. These are the grade level certifications:

  • Grade 0 : Prarambhik
  • Grade 1 : Praveshika Pratham
  • Grade 2 : Praveshika Poorna
  • Grade 3 : Madhyama Pratham
  • Grade 4 : Madhyama Poorna
  • Grade 5 : Visharad Pratham
  • Grade 6 : Visharad Poorna
  • Grade 7 : Alankar Pratham
  • Grade 8 : Alankar Poorna

5. Upon completion of their curriculum for a given level, students prepare for their certification exam. Kathak certificates will be issued to the candidate after taking the certification exam once each year. Theory and practical exams are held on separate dates. Practical exams are assessed by external examiner.

The initial foundation course /Prarambhik can take anywhere between 1 to 1.5 years for completion and will be accessed and evaluated by the teacher to ensure the student is ready for the exams.

6. Practical exam date is decided based on availability of external examiner. Students are required to have at least 1 year gap between subsequent exams. Minimum age for Level 1 exam is 8, and increases with subsequent exams (example minimum age for Level 2 exam is 9).

7. Direct appearance is not permitted beyond level 3 exam. This means, even if you have 10 years of dance experience and no certification, you have to start the process by taking level 3 exam first and then each subsequent level exam with at least 1 year gap.

8. Students begin their formal education in Mohiniyattam by learning the following sets of adavus or footwork in Mohiniyattam:

  • Thaganam
  • Jaganam
  • Dhaganam
  • Samishram (Vakram)
  • Thirumaanam (Finishing Adavus)
  • For Mohiniyattam, students are only introduced to a recital piece after learning at least the first  two to three sets of adavus. Along with the adavus,students are also taught  the theory behind the art form such as:
  • History and Evolution of Mohiniyattam as well as mudras (hand gestures) and their usage in Mohiniyattam.
  • Structural Elements of Mohiniyattam (Nrittam, Nrithyam, Natyam)
    • Different types of Abhinayam
    • Rasam
    • Bhavam
    • Defined uses and applications of the body parts (head, eyes, eyebrows, etc.) in Mohiniyattam
    • Mudras and their applications
    • Thalam

9.   A total of 9 classes every month (includes 1 make up session).

10. Class Fees to be paid for the entire month (not per session). For a total of 9 classes (Includes 1 make up class) per month.

11. Makeup class timings will be announced end of every month. Makeup class is optional and can be requested as needed.

12. Kids classes Ages (6-18) and Adults classes Ages (18+)

Payment and Missed Class Policy:

Training requires consistency in order to achieve the most benefit. However, we understand that students may occasionally need to miss a class. Use the following guidelines to ensure that you get the most out of your classes at the Academy.

  1. All students should pay their fees at the beginning of every month. Students who do not pay at the beginning will not be allowed to join the class.

  2. Fees will not be adjusted if a student misses their classes. If the class remains closed, fees will not be charged for that class. However, if a student misses their class, then the teacher will not responsible for the makeup class. However, videos of the missed class(es) if available will be shared with the student.

  3. Every student and parent should maintain discipline and show respect towards the guru or teacher.

  4. Everyone entering the class should remove their shoes outside the class before entering.

  5. Dress Code: Students should be dressed in Salwar-Kameez, and Dupatta properly draped, and their hair should be neatly tied back. In case of short hair, students should wear a hair band or put clips. For smaller kids, dupatta is optional

  6. Parents can be present in the class only if required and permitted by the teacher. Else, it is preferable for parents to wait outside the class.

  7. The Academy management/teacher is not responsible for any physical injury or hurt caused to the students during the process of learning dance or while being in the class or on the building premises.

  8. The school/teacher has the right to discontinue training of any student if they fail to abide by the rules.
